Bernie Sanders ruined a wedding with a rant about baseball free agency in a 1999 indie film
In the early days of 1999, baseball in New York was the best it'd been in decades: The Yankees were in the midst of a dynasty and the Mets, coming off back-to-back winning seasons, were on the verge of consecutive NLCS appearances and a date with the Bronx Bombers in the 2000 Subway Series.
Back then R. Kelly had the No. 1 song in America with "I'm Your Angel," "Patch Adams" was king of the box office and Bernie Sanders was just a U.S. representative from Vermont.
Sanders -- now a candidate for the Democratic nomination in the upcoming 2016 presidential election -- was no stranger to New York baseball, having been born and raised in Brooklyn at the height of the Dodgers phenomenon, right before their move to Los Angeles. So his small role in the 1999 indie film "My X-Girlfriend's Wedding Reception" hit close to home.
The film starred former pop star Debbie Gibson and the late Dom DeLuise and centered on a musician tasked with playing, get this, his ex-girlfriend's wedding reception. Sanders played Rabbi Manny Shevitz, who presides over the ceremony and goes off on a rant about the Dodgers leaving Brooklyn and free agency ruining baseball:
