39-year-old Bruce Chen shut down Team Cuba while wearing some very comfortable shoes
Bruce Chen has been out of Major League Baseball for two years, so sure, you could've doubted his chances pitching for China against Cuba in the World Baseball Classic on Tuesday night. But remember: Chen pitched 17 years in the bigs and won 82 games. He threw alongside Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux and John Smoltz in his rookie year in 1998. He was on the 2014 Royals team that went to the World Series. He pitched on the Expos with Bartolo Colon!
So, of course, Chen shut down the competition -- giving up just three hits and zero runs over 2 2/3 innings (49-pitch limit). He even induced a rally-killing double play for his final act:
And he did all of this while wearing what any retired person should wear when they're retired -- some really comfortable (possibly slip-on?) shoes:
