Cristian Javier to undergo Tommy John surgery (source)
HOUSTON -- Astros starting pitcher Cristian Javier will undergo Tommy John surgery on Thursday, a source told MLB.com. The team has not confirmed the news, which was first reported by The Athletic.
Javier, who has been sidelined since May 27, sought a second opinion on his right forearm this week. He was examined by Dr. Keith Meister, who recommended the surgery, according to The Athletic.
Last week, Javier was unable to throw a scheduled bullpen session and was placed on the injured list for the second time this season. He was previously out from April 21 to May 11 with neck discomfort.
This news is the latest blow for a team that has dealt with a string of bad news of late. Right-handed starter José Urquidy is seeking a second opinion on his right forearm, and while the club declined to comment on his status, it’s been reported widely that he is likely headed for surgery, too.
That leaves the Astros with no choice but to continue to navigate through the season with a razor-thin rotation consisting of Justin Verlander, Framber Valdez, Hunter Brown, Ronel Blanco and Spencer Arrighetti.
In three starts in May prior to his recent setback, Javier allowed 11 runs, spanning 11 1/3 innings. Six days after his final outing on May 21, the Astros put him on the IL, citing discomfort in his right arm.
Javier signed a five-year extension worth $64 million in the spring of 2023. He is earning $7 million this year and is set to earn $10 million in 2025, $21 million in ’26 and $21 million in ’27.
