LA Rams owner Kroenke reaches agreement to buy Angels

ANAHEIM -- Arte Moreno’s tenure as Angels owner is coming to an end, as Los Angeles Rams owner Stan Kroenke has entered an agreement to purchase the club, with the transaction expected to become official in the first quarter of 2027, pending Major League approval.

It ends Moreno’s 23-year tenure as owner since he bought the club in 2003, but he will remain a minority owner with an undisclosed share. The Angels had early success under his ownership, winning six division titles (2004-05, ’07-09 and ’14) but have struggled over the last decade. They haven’t had a winning record since 2015 and currently have a 53-85 record that’s tied for the worst mark in the AL.

“The Angels are a storied franchise anchored in a great market,” Kroenke said in a statement released by both the Angels and Kroenke Sports & Entertainment. “We look forward to an exciting future with the Angels organization.”

It’s been a season marked by change for the organization, as longtime club president John Carpino retired and was replaced by Molly Jolly while general manager Perry Minasian was dismissed in early June. The Angels hired former longtime Cardinals GM John Mozeliak as interim GM and he helped oversee the Draft, the Trade Deadline that saw them move seven players, and a recent front office shakeup. Mozeliak’s contract ends in December, and he has stated he hasn’t decided if he’ll remain with the organization but remains tasked with helping find a new GM.

Jolly and Mozeliak didn’t offer a timeline of when Moreno started to get serious about selling the club and said they were generally surprised by the news. Neither has communicated with KSE just yet, but both said things will remain business as usual for now.

“This was news to me,” Mozeliak said. “When I first came here, I spoke with Arte and he had mentioned that this was a possibility, but to learn this morning from Molly, I was definitely surprised, but it wasn't a shocker. I think it's exciting news for everybody. Change is what I came in to try to start doing.”

It took many by surprise that Moreno decided to sell, as he said during Spring Training that he had no interest in selling at that time. The 80-year-old previously explored selling in 2022, only to decide to keep his stake in the franchise.

“The Angels Organization is pleased to announce this transaction with Kroenke Sports & Entertainment,” Moreno said in a press release. “The Moreno Family has been honored to steward the Angels for 23 years and we believe with KSE’s experience and success they are the best next owner for the franchise. The Angels Organization looks forward to continuing its commitment to the fans, our employees, the players and our business partners.”

Kroenke owns the NFL’s Rams and developed SoFi Stadium and the surrounding 300-acre Hollywood Park district in Inglewood. KSE also owns the Denver Nuggets (NBA), Colorado Avalanche (NHL), Colorado Rapids (MLS), Colorado Mammoth (NLL), and Arsenal Football Club (Premier League).

The Rams won Super Bowl LVI and are considered the favorites to win the title again this season while the Nuggets won the 2023 NBA Finals and the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup in 2001 and ’22. The Rapids also won the MLS Cup in 2010 while Arsenal won the 2025-26 Premier League title.

Angels superstar Mike Trout said he had a great relationship with Moreno, but is excited about Kroenke’s history of building winning franchises.

“Kroenke's got a track record of success and winning championships with his teams,” Trout said. “I’m super excited about it and can’t wait to meet him.”

The Rams and Angels also have history, as the Rams played at Angel Stadium from 1980-1994 before moving to St. Louis. Kroenke became part-owner of the Rams in ’95, but was instrumental in bringing them back to the Los Angeles area in 2016 with his privately financed project in Inglewood.

Angel Stadium underwent renovations from 1996-98 but recent attempts to renovate the ballpark or develop around it stalled under Moreno, including a collapsed land deal in ’22. KSE, however, is considered a premier sports real estate developer and figuring out the stadium situation will be a key task. The organization’s current lease is through Dec. 31, 2032, and the Angels hold two more extensions that could keep them at Angel Stadium through '38.

Jolly, though, said it’s too early in the process to see how things will play out but that there’s a sense of a positive buzz throughout the organization.

“It's an exciting day,” Jolly said. “Arte loves the Angels, but to have the next owner be Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, and have that caliber of owner who has been successful with teams in every major sports league, I think is fantastic for the organization, for the fans, for our partners, for the players.”
