Detmers dominates Rangers to cap strong rookie season
ANAHEIM -- It was a fitting end to a solid rookie season for Angels left-hander Reid Detmers.
Detmers, who had an eventful first full season in the Majors that saw him throw a no-hitter on May 10 and record an immaculate inning on July 31, threw six strong innings to lift the Angels to a 4-1 win over the Rangers on Friday night at Angel Stadium. Detmers allowed one run on four hits and a walk with nine strikeouts to finish his season with a 3.77 ERA and 122 strikeouts in 129 innings over 25 starts.
"You always want to finish on a strong note," Detmers said. "The last few weeks had been a little bit of a struggle, but this was a good bounceback. I'm glad the way it went. It was a good way to end the season."
Detmers, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, provided plenty of optimism for the future, as he's expected to be counted on as a major part of the rotation next season. The 23-year-old is one of three young lefties to step up in the rotation this year, joining Patrick Sandoval and José Suarez.
"It was a great night for him, a heck of a season,” said interim manager Phil Nevin. "You can see there's a lot there. There's a high ceiling, there's leadership. You can see him being the anchor of a rotation and leading guys and making them better. It's hard to say about somebody that's 23 years old and two years out of college, but those are the types of guys you win with."
Detmers learned plenty throughout the season, especially during a tough stretch in June that saw him get optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on June 22. Detmers made just one start at Triple-A, striking out 14 in six innings, but more importantly he tweaked his mechanics and his slider, which turned out to be crucial for him down the stretch.
Detmers rejoined the rotation on July 8 and responded by throwing six scoreless innings against the Orioles with seven strikeouts in his first start back. He kept it rolling the rest of the way, posting a 3.04 ERA with 78 strikeouts in 71 innings over his last 13 outings.
"There were a lot of ups and downs, and I wished I started the season better, but going down and figuring out some stuff and coming back helped a lot,” Detmers said. “I learned a lot from it and saw a lot of improvements."
He mostly cruised against the Rangers, allowing his lone run in the fourth inning. Detmers walked Corey Seager to open the inning with a 3-2 slider off the plate and Seager advanced on a slow roller from Nathaniel Lowe. Adolis García then doubled to right field on a 1-2 changeup to score Seager. But Detmers avoided further damage by striking out Josh Jung and getting Mark Mathias to fly out to right field.
"He threw the ball well, he hit his spots and kept us off balance," said interim Rangers manager Tony Beasley. "He's a good pitcher. It's not like he's not a quality guy. He's a tough lefty, and when he's hitting his spots and executing these pitches, it's not going to be an easy night for any offense."
Detmers had his swing-and-miss stuff working against Texas, as he induced 21 whiffs out of his 93 pitches thrown, including 12 with his slider. He also registered four swings and misses with his curve, three with his four-seamer and two with his changeup. The nine strikeouts were tied for his second most this season, behind his 12 strikeouts against the Rangers on July 31.
“Everything felt good,” Detmers said. “The changeup felt really good today. The slider had been showing some improvements the last couple weeks. I got a couple more swings and misses with it. Overall, I felt good."
Detmers said he plans to have a similar offseason to last year, as he trains in Florida at Cressey Sports Performance in Palm Beach Gardens. He said improving his changeup is one of his biggest goals heading into next year, and he was pleased to feel strong and healthy throughout this season.
“I have some stuff to work on,” Detmers said. “But I’ll go back to the same place where I know the guys there. They know me and how my body works. I’m going to go there and try to improve on the things I need to work on. The main thing that sticks out to me is working on the changeup, but I need to be more consistent with all my pitches and pound the zone more.”
