A rare sight, Trout not among MVP finalists
ANAHEIM -- For just the second time since 2012, Angels superstar Mike Trout will not finish among the Top 3 in the voting for the 2020 American League Most Valuable Player Award.
Trout, a three-time MVP and four-time runner up, was not among the three finalists for the award, as announced on MLB Network on Monday night. The finalists are José Abreu (White Sox), DJ LeMahieu (Yankees) and José Ramírez (Indians).
Trout's worst finish in the balloting for AL MVP was fourth in 2017, when he missed roughly two months with an injury. He's finished in the Top 5 in MVP voting a Major League-record eight straight seasons, per the Elias Sports Bureau, and he could add to that total with a fourth or fifth place finish this year. The full results will be released on Nov. 12.
Trout, 29, won AL MVP Awards in 2014, '16 and '19 and finished second in '12, '13, '15 and '18. Only Barry Bonds has won more MVP Awards with seven during his 22-year career.
Trout batted .281/.390/.603 with 17 homers, nine doubles, one stolen base and 46 RBIs in 53 games in '20. He was tied for third in the AL in Wins Above Replacement (WAR) with Abreu, per Fangraphs.com. Trout (2.6 WAR) trailed Ramírez (3.4) and teammate Anthony Rendon (2.7) among AL leaders. But the Angels went 26-34 and missed the postseason for a sixth straight season, and neither Trout nor Rendon were finalists.
