ANAHEIM -- The Angels suffered an injury scare on Thursday night when left fielder Justin Upton departed their 7-1 loss to the Rays in the sixth inning after being struck on the left hand by a 95-mph fastball from Chris Archer, but they were able to breathe a sigh of relief after initial X-rays revealed no fracture.
The Angels said Upton is day to day, reassuring news for a club that had earlier Thursday learned it would lose reliever Keynan Middleton to season-ending Tommy John surgery.
"It feels OK," Upton said. "Obviously, it's going to be sore, but we'll see how it feels tomorrow. Hopefully, it's not too bad and I can work through it."
Upton was in visible pain after being hit by the pitch, drawing immediate attention from a team trainer and subsequently exiting the game. It was an unsettling scene for the Angels, though Upton said he was fairly confident the injury wasn't serious.
"I've broken a bone before," Upton said. "I kind of had a feeling that nothing was broken, just because I've had the feeling before. I was pretty optimistic getting the X-ray."
Upton has been the Angels' hottest hitter this month, batting .317 with seven home runs and 21 RBIs in 16 games.
"We'll just go day to day and see how it is," manager Mike Scioscia said. "It's still sore, even though, fortunately, there wasn't anything broken there. We'll see how it goes."
