ANAHEIM -- The Angels agreed to terms with right-handed reliever Daniel Hudson on a Minor League deal to add bullpen depth, a source told MLB.com on Friday. Hudson will earn $1.5 million if he makes the Major League team and could earn another $1.5 million in performance bonuses.
The club has not confirmed the deal.
Hudson, 31, appeared in 40 games with the Dodgers last year, posting a 4.11 ERA with 44 strikeouts, 18 walks and six homers allowed in 46 innings. But he finished the season on the disabled list, as he missed the last two months of the season with right forearm tightness.
He's undergone Tommy John surgery on his right elbow twice, both 2012 and '13 while with the D-backs. But he's maintained good velocity. His fastball averages 95.4 mph and he pairs that with a slider that averages 86.7 mph and an occasional changeup that comes in at a similar speed.
Hudson will compete for a spot in the Angels bullpen, which is expected to be comprised of closer Cody Allen and setup relievers Ty Buttrey, Hansel Robles, Luis García, Justin Anderson and Cam Bedrosian. Others competing for a spot include Noé Ramirez, John Curtiss, Jake Jewell, Taylor Cole, Miguel Almonte and Williams Jerez.
Hudson has a career 3.99 ERA over 619 2/3 innings and nine seasons between the White Sox, D-backs, Pirates and Dodgers. He served as a starter from 2009-2012 before switching to relief in '14 after Tommy John surgery.
