Rendon launches homer in Angels debut
ANAHEIM -- Third baseman Anthony Rendon made an immediate impact in his first game with the Angels, connecting on a two-run homer, walking twice and scoring two runs in a 10-2 win over the Mariners in the home opener at Angel Stadium on Tuesday night.
Rendon -- signed to a seven-year, $245 million deal in the offseason -- missed the first four games of the season with oblique soreness, as the Angels fell to 1-3 on the year. But he was in the lineup at third base and hitting third, right behind Mike Trout on Tuesday, and helped the offense finally break out.
“It felt good just to be out there,” Rendon said. “Just to be out there and having a live ball coming at you. … It felt good to be able to contribute to the team and get that first win [while playing] out of the way.”
Rendon’s two-run homer came in the eighth off reliever Zac Grotz on a first-pitch slider after Trout singled to open the inning. It was the 137th homer of Rendon’s career and his first hit in an Angels uniform. He smacked a career-high 34 homers with the Nationals last year.
"I didn't want to be too passive at the plate even though I didn't have too many ABs,” Rendon said. “The only way to get into my rhythm is to be aggressive. I was able to connect with one and it went over the fence, thankfully."
Rendon grounded out in his first at-bat, but he drew a walk in the third inning that loaded the bases and led to an RBI fielder’s choice from Justin Upton, with Rendon beating the throw to second from third baseman Kyle Seager.
"That's a great hustle play on his part," manager Joe Maddon said. "That is something that you either have it in your head before the ball is hit or you don't. That's how you are able to be safe there. Those are the kind of things that we got to be able to do. That's the kind of baseball we need to play on a nightly basis to get where we want to be."
Rendon walked again in the sixth and scored on an RBI double from Shohei Ohtani.
