Halos claim Goodwin, set Opening Day roster
Angels opt for eight-man bullpen, all right-handers
OAKLAND -- The Angels officially finalized their roster for Opening Day against the A's on Thursday, and it included outfielder Brian Goodwin, who was claimed on waivers from the Royals on Wednesday.
The Angels needed an extra outfielder with Justin Upton set to open the year on the 10-day injured list with left turf toe, and made room for Goodwin by designating right-hander Jesus Castillo for assignment. The Angels also signed lefty reliever Sam Freeman to a Minor League deal, but he didn't make the Opening Day roster.
With Goodwin joining the roster, the Angels are opening the year with 12 position players and decided on their eight relievers on Thursday. They're set to open the year with closer Cody Allen and right-handers Ty Buttrey, Justin Anderson, Cam Bedrosian, Hansel Robles, Luis Garcia, Noe Ramirez and Luke Bard.
"We look at that as just being responsible and making sure that everything is finalized before we call anything final," general manager Billy Eppler said. "There's only downside in announcing something early. There's no upside in that."
Freeman, 31, has posted a career 3.61 ERA with 226 strikeouts in 226 2/3 innings over seven seasons with the Cardinals, Rangers, Brewers and Braves. He had a 4.29 ERA with 58 strikeouts and 32 walks in 50 1/3 innings with the Braves last year and averaged 95.2 mph on his fastball. He'll open the season at Triple-A Salt Lake but could come up early in the year, as the club doesn't have a lefty in its bullpen.
Here's a look at the roster for Thursday's 1:10 p.m. PT game:
Catcher (two): Jonathan Lucroy, Kevan Smith
Lucroy will be the starting catcher, while Smith beat out Jose Briceno for the backup role this spring. Smith is out of Minor League options, meaning he can’t be sent to the Minors without first being exposed on waivers.
First base (two): Justin Bour, Albert Pujols
Bour figures to be the regular at first base, with Pujols seeing most of his action at designated hitter. But Pujols did play a lot of first in Spring Training just in case he’s needed. Once Shohei Ohtani returns in May, Ohtani will serve as the regular DH and the Angels will have to figure out a plan for Bour and Pujols.
Second base (two): David Fletcher,Tommy La Stella
La Stella and Fletcher are likely to platoon at second base with La Stella seeing more action against right-handers. Fletcher is the better defender, but La Stella gets on base at a higher clip offensively.
Third base (one): Zack Cozart
Cozart missed most of spring after sustaining a left calf strain but is healthy enough to start the year as the club’s regular third baseman. Cozart could also see some action at shortstop to backup Andrelton Simmons, especially because La Stella doesn’t play shortstop.
Shortstop (one): Andrelton Simmons
Simmons is the best defender at his position in baseball and has become a better hitter as he’s gained more experience. He had a rough spring, but Angels manager Brad Ausmus said he isn’t worried.
Outfield (four): Mike Trout, Kole Calhoun, Peter Bourjos, Brian Goodwin
The Angels didn’t have much outfield depth after Upton’s injury, as Michael Hermosillo is also out after undergoing offseason surgery to repair a sports hernia. So the Angels picked up Goodwin, who will split time with Bourjos in left until Upton returns in roughly three weeks. Goodwin, 28, has played parts of three seasons in the Majors, slashing .250/.315/.454 with 19 homers, 10 stolen bases and 60 RBIs in 171 games with the Nationals and Royals. He’s out of options.
Starting pitcher (five): Trevor Cahill, Matt Harvey, Felix Peña, Tyler Skaggs, Chris Stratton
Andrew Heaney starting the year on the injured list with left elbow inflammation opened the door for Felix Pena to make the rotation, but in a surprise move, right-hander Jaime Barria will open the year at Triple-A Salt Lake. The Angels traded for Stratton, and he’ll open the year as the club’s fifth starter.
Relief pitchers (eight): Cody Allen, Ty Buttrey, Justin Anderson, Cam Bedrosian, Hansel Robles, Luis García, Noé Ramirez and Luke Bard
The Angels decided to go with an all right-handed bullpen after trading Williams Jerez to the Giants for Stratton and releasing veteran Dan Jennings on Tuesday. Ramirez, who was on the bubble early in camp but pitched well enough to make the roster, is out of Minor League options. Bard was added to the 40-man roster this spring and has options, but he ultimately made the Opening Day roster for the second straight year.
Injured list: Shohei Ohtani, Justin Upton, Andrew Heaney, Taylor Cole, Michael Hermosillo, Nick Tropeano
