White Sox Agree to Terms with RHP Mat Latos

The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms on a one-year, $3-million contract with right-handed pitcher Mat Latos.
Latos, 28, combined to go 4-10 with a 4.95 ERA (64 ER/116.1 IP) and 100 strikeouts in 24 games (21 starts) last season with Miami, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels. The 6-foot-6, 245-pound Latos was on the disabled list from May 23-June 12 with left knee inflammation.
"Mat adds another quality veteran arm to our rotation and also increases our overall pitching depth, which always is essential to having a successful season," said Rick Hahn, White Sox senior vice president/general manager. "While we believe in the futures of several of our young starters, the chance to add a pitcher of Mat's caliber was too good of an opportunity for us to pass up. He has proven over his career that when healthy, he takes the baseball and logs quality innings."
Latos owns a career record of 64-55 with a 3.51 ERA (417 ER/1,068.1 IP), 959 strikeouts and .237 (949-4,005) opponents average over seven major-league seasons with San Diego (2009-11), Cincinnati (2012-14), the Marlins (2015), Dodgers (2015) and Angels (2015). Among active pitchers, Latos ranks 18th with a 3.04 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 19th with an average of 8.08 strikeouts per 9.0 IP.
From 2010-13, he went 51-35 with a 3.27 ERA (290 ER/799.0 IP) and 746 strikeouts, ranking third among National League pitchers with a .232 opponents average, fifth in strikeouts and tied for eighth in victories. During that four-year stretch, he made 30 starts and struck out 185-plus batters four times, won 14 games three times and threw 200.0-plus IP twice.
Latos originally was selected by the Padres in the 11th round of the 2006 draft.
The White Sox 40-man roster increases to 40.
