Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

Penrod, 27, has pitched in 22 games (12 starts) for Double-A Portland (seven games) and Worcester (15 games) this season, recording a 4.16 ERA (29 ER/62.2 IP) with 93 strikeouts. Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Texas Rangers in 2018, the Idaho native owns a 3.98 ERA (42 ER/95.0 IP) in 30 career minor league games (19 starts). The left-hander was signed by Boston as a minor league free agent on August 16, 2023, after pitching in the Independent Pioneer League from 2021-23.

Horn, 26, has recorded a 6.35 ERA (12 ER/17.0 IP) in 15 games with Boston this season, his Major League debut. Acquired from the Chicago White Sox on April 30, the Texas native also owns a 2.25 ERA (7 ER/28.0 IP) with 32 strikeouts and a .163 opponent batting average (16-for-98) in 20 games (one start) with Worcester.

Booser, 32, pitched in last night’s game against the New York Yankees. The left-hander owns a 3.38 ERA (16 ER/42.2 IP) with 43 strikeouts in 42 games with Boston this season, his Major League debut. He has also pitched in seven games with Worcester, allowing seven runs in 10.0 innings while striking out 21 batters. The Washington native was signed by Boston as a minor league free agent on February 6, 2023.

Kelly, 29, pitched in last night’s game against New York. In 49 games for the Red Sox this season, he owns a 3.97 ERA (25 ER/56.2 IP) with 61 strikeouts. The right-hander has also pitched in seven games with Worcester, allowing zero runs in 10.2 innings with 11 strikeouts and just one hit allowed. Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Oakland Athletics in 2017, the Virginia native owns a 3.95 ERA (35 ER/79.2 IP) in 70 career games with Boston (2022-24).

Heineman, 33, played in two games for Boston this season. In 51 games with Worcester, the switch-hitter has batted .252 (40-for-159) with six home runs. Originally selected by the Houston Astros in the eighth round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, the California native has batted .216 (54-for-250) in 106 career Major League games with the Miami Marlins (2019), San Francisco Giants (2020), Toronto Blue Jays (2022-23), Pittsburgh Pirates (2022-23), and Red Sox (2024).
