Phillies to Host Nike MLB RBI Mid-Atlantic Regionals Starting on Friday; Top Youth All-Star Teams Come to Philadelphia in Hopes of Advancing to the Nike RBI World Series
WHAT: The Phillies will host the top Nike RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities) baseball and softball youth teams for Major League Baseball’s Nike RBI Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament, one of eight tournaments being held across the country this month, with winners advancing to the MLB Nike RBI World Series at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex in Vero Beach in August.
The 16 Nike RBI teams participating represent DC Elite Softball, Durham Triple Play, Lehigh Valley, Michael Stepp of Greater Harrisburg, and Williamsport, as well as the Orioles, Pirates and Phillies.
The three-day event will culminate with the top two teams from each division competing in the championship games on Sunday, July 23, at the Phillies MLB Urban Youth Academy Fields. All games are open to the public.
Winners of the Nike RBI Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament will advance to the MLB Nike RBI World Series hosted at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex in Vero Beach. The baseball division will be held August 1-6 and the softball division will be held August 8-13.
The Phillies RBI program began in 1993 as a part of MLB’s international RBI campaign, which today encompasses more than 200 cities and as many as 120,000 male and female players a year. There are over 2,000 teenagers in 20 locations in Philadelphia, Southern New Jersey and Delaware participating in the Phillies Nike RBI Leagues sponsored by Nike and Richman’s Ice Cream.
