MIami Marlins announce scouting department additions and promotions

*MIAMI – *The Miami Marlins today announced the following additions and promotions in the Scouting Department:

Roman Ocumarez - Director, International Scouting

Chris Pelekoudas - Professional Scouting Crosschecker

Joe Lisewski – Special Assignment Scout

Ryan Cisterna – Area Scout, KS, MO, AR, IL

Hunter Jarmon – Area Scout, Southern CA

Brad Tyler – Area Scout, GA, Northern FL

Eric Wordekemper – Area Scout – IA, IL, MN, ND, NE, SD, WI

Ocumarez enters his first season with the Marlins as Director, International Scouting – his 23rd in professional baseball. Prior to joining the Marlins, Ocumarez spent eight years in the Houston Astros organization, most recently serving as the Astros’ International Scouting Supervisor, overseeing the Astros’ day-to-day scouting efforts in the Dominican Republic and Latin America. In 2020, Roman also served as the domestic Area Scout for the Astros in South Texas & Puerto Rico. Some of the most notable international Astros players signed during his tenure include: RHP Luis Garcia, LHP Framber Valdez, RHP Cristian Javier, and most recently Houston’s top 30 prospects, SS Cristian Gonzalez (No. 14), INF Freudis Nova (No. 24), RHP Jose Alberto Rivera (No. 29) and RHP Jojanse Torres (No. 30).

Prior to joining the Astros in September of 2013, Roman was an International Area Scout and Dominican Scouting Supervisor for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the Dominican Republic from 2011-2013. Born and raised in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Ocumarez also spent four seasons with Cleveland from 2006-2010 as an Area Scout and Operations Assistant at the Cleveland’s Dominican Academy. Before his scouting career, Ocumarez spent three seasons as an infielder in the Cleveland system from 1999-2002.

Pelekoudas joins the Marlins in 2022 with 18 years of professional baseball scouting experience, all with the Seattle Mariners. That time included seven years as a Pro Scout, eight years as the four corners Area Supervisor and three years as an Amateur Crosschecker. Pelekoudas graduated in 2001 from the University of Arizona, where he was a member of the baseball team as a player for one year and undergraduate coach for four. He is the son of longtime Mariners executive, Lee Pelekoudas and grandson of Chris Pelekoudas, who was a National League umpire from 1960-1975.

Lisewski enters his eighth season with the Marlins organization, his first in the role of Special Assignment Scout. He most recently held the role of Professional Scout for the Marlins since 2019. He began his career with the organization as a video coach for Single-A Jupiter in 2015, before transitioning to Minor League Video Coordinator in 2016-18.

Cisterna joins the Marlins in 2022 in his first scouting role. He worked the last 11 years as a college baseball coach, most recently as the Assistant Coach for California State University, Bakersfield from 2018-21. He spent the 2017 season with Ottawa University after six seasons with Grand Canyon University from 2011-2016 in the same role. Cisterna was selected in the 34th round of the 2009 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels from the University of Arkansas and played four years of professional baseball as a catcher and pitcher.

Jarmon enters his first season with the Marlins after working the 2021 season with the Boston Red Sox Amateur Scouting Department and the 2020 season with the San Diego Padres Amateur Scouting Department. A two-sport athlete at Oregon State University, Jarmon played three seasons of football as a wide receiver before switching to baseball as an outfielder. He signed with the Padres as a Minor League free agent in 2017 and played two seasons of professional baseball before transitioning to the front office. He participated in Major League Baseball’s Diversity Pipeline Scout Development Program in the Fall of 2021.

Tyler brings 14 years of scouting experience to the Marlins after working with Cleveland in various scouting roles since 2008, rising to National Coordinator in 2019. A sixth-round pick by Baltimore in 1990 from the University of Evansville, he played 14 seasons of Minor League Baseball including eight at the Triple-A level.

Wordekemper joins the Marlins after spending eight years with Creighton University as an Assistant Baseball Coach. A 46th-round pick by the New York Yankees in 2005 out of Creighton, he pitched eight seasons in the minors reaching Triple-A and went 22-13 with a 2.70 ERA in 266 career games.

The Scouting staffs are led by DJ Svihlik - Senior Director, Amateur Scouting, Hadi Raad – Director, Pro Scouting, and Adrian Lorenzo – Director, International Operations.
