Red Sox place right-handed pitcher Carson Smith on 10-day disabled list

The Boston Red Sox today placed right-handed pitcher Carson Smith on the 10-day disabled list with a right shoulder subluxation. To fill Smith's spot on the 25-man roster, the club recalled left-handed pitcher Bobby Poyner from Triple-A Pawtucket.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Smith, 28, is 1-1 with a 3.77 ERA (6 ER/14.1 IP) and 18 strikeouts in 18 appearances for the Red Sox this season. In his last 14 outings since April 8, the right-hander has posted a 1.54 ERA (2 ER/11.2 IP), a .217 opponent batting average, and 14 strikeouts, issuing zero walks in his last 11 games. Left-handed batters are only 2-for-20 (.100) against Smith in 2018, including 1-for-18 (.056) since March 31. Acquired by Boston from Seattle on December 7, 2015, the Texas native has appeared in 108 major league games between the Mariners (2014-15) and Red Sox (2016-18), posting a 2.21 ERA (25 ER/102.0 IP), a .199 opponent batting average, 129 strikeouts, and only four home runs allowed.

Poyner, 25, began the season with the major league club after attending spring training as a non-roster invitee. In seven relief appearances -- the first of his big league career -- over two stints with Boston, he has allowed two runs on nine hits in 8.0 innings, striking out nine batters and walking only one. Poyner has also appeared in eight minor league games this season, most recently throwing 1.0 inning for Pawtucket on Sunday. He has held left-handed hitters to a .190 batting average (4-for-21) in 2018, including .154 (2-for-13) at the major league level. Selected by Boston in the 14th round of the 2015 June Draft, Poyner has appeared in 107 minor league games, posting a 2.34 ERA (41 ER/158.0 IP) with 41 saves.
