Rangers receive RHP Adrian Sampson on waiver claim from Seattle Mariners
The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has received right-handed pitcher Adrian Sampson from the Seattle Mariners via a waiver claim. Sampson, who was on the Mariners' 60-day disabled list, has been transferred to the Rangers' 60-day disabled list.
Sampson, 25, made his major league debut with Seattle this season, allowing 4 runs/earned runs over 4.2 innings in his lone outing on June 18 at Boston. He did not throw a pitch in his final scheduled outing on June 23 at Detroit, leaving that contest after warming up due to injury. Sampson had surgery to repair a flexor tendon in his right elbow on June 30 and is expected to be in an injury rehabilitation program for the start of the 2017 season.
A Seattle-area native, Sampson was originally selected by Pittsburgh in the fifth round of the 2012 June draft and was sent to the Mariners in a July 31, 2015 trade involving J.A. Happ. He went 7-4 with a 3.25 ERA (29 ER/80.1 IP) over 13 games/starts with Triple-A Tacoma in 2016. In the minor leagues over his five-year professional career, Sampson has a 4.01 ERA in 105 games/102 starts with a 1.303 WHIP figure while averaging 6.4 strikeouts per 9 innings and just 0.7 home runs per 9 innings.
With the claiming of Sampson, the Rangers now have a full 40-man roster along with two players (Prince Fielder and Sampson) on the 60-day disabled list.
