White Sox Make Five Roster Moves
CLEVELAND – Prior to tonight’s game at Cleveland, the Chicago White Sox transferred outfielder Jon Jay to the 60-day injured list, purchased the contract of infielder Danny Mendick from Class AAA Charlotte and recalled right-handed pitcher Dylan Covey, catcher Zack Collins and outfielder Daniel Palka from Charlotte.
Mendick, 25, batted .279/.368/.444 (133-477) with 26 doubles, 17 home runs, 64 RBI, 75 runs scored and 66 walks over 133 games with Charlotte this season. He appeared in 48 games at second base, 42 at shortstop, 35 at third and nine in left field.
Mendick, 5-foot-10 and 195 pounds, originally was selected by the Sox in the 22nd round of the 2015 draft out of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. He has no major-league experience and will wear uniform No. 20.
Covey, 28, is 2-1 with a 2.82 ERA (16 ER/51.0 IP) and 46 strikeouts over 13 games (11 starts) with Charlotte in 2019 and 1-7 with a 6.88 ERA (40 ER/52.1 IP) and 35 strikeouts over 16 games (10 starts) with the White Sox.
Collins, 24, spent the majority of the season with Charlotte, hitting .282/.403/.548 (83-294) with 19 doubles, 19 home runs, 74 RBI, 56 runs scored and 62 RBI over 88 games. He would have ranked third in the International League in OPS (.951) and slugging percentage and sixth in on-base percentage with the required plate appearances.
Collins, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2016 draft, also appeared in nine games with the White Sox from June 18-July 15, going 2-26 (.077) in his major-league debut.
Palka, 27, hit .263/.374/.527 (104-395) with 23 doubles, 27 homers, 72 RBI, 83 runs scored and 72 walks over 106 games with the Knights in 2019. He ranked ninth in the International League in home runs. Palka also has appeared in 17 games with the White Sox this season, going 1-45 (.022), after hitting 27 homers as a rookie in 2018.
Jay, 34, was placed on the 10-day injured list on August 30 with a strained right hip. He is scheduled to undergo season-ending surgery on Thursday.
With the moves, the White Sox active roster is at 31 players: 16 pitchers, three catchers, seven infielders and five outfielders. The 40-man roster is at 40.
