White Sox Acquire Left-handed Pitcher Bailey Horn From The Cubs In Exchange For Right-hander Matthew Thompson

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Chicago White Sox have acquired left-handed pitcher Bailey Horn from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for right-hander Matthew Thompson. To make room for Horn on the 40-man roster, the White Sox placed right-hander Jesse Scholtens on the 60-day injured list with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Horn, 26, combined to go 7-3 with a 4.21 ERA (27 ER/53.0 IP) and 78 strikeouts in 45 relief appearances last season between Class AA Tennessee and Class AAA Iowa. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Horn limited lefties to a .156 (12-77) average with just one home run allowed in 2023. A native of Waco, Texas, he was ranked by Baseball America as the No. 28 prospect in the Cubs system entering the season.

Horn is 11-9 with a 4.20 ERA (81 ER/173.2 IP), seven saves and 221 strikeouts (11.45 per 9.0 IP) in 99 appearances (14 starts) over three minor-league seasons in the Cubs (2021-23) and White Sox (2021) organizations. He originally was selected by the White Sox in the fifth round of the 2020 draft out of Auburn University, and was traded to the Cubs in exchange for right-hander Ryan Tepera on July 29, 2021.

Thompson, 23, is 12-31 with a 5.09 ERA (175 ER/309.2 IP) and 320 strikeouts in 74 starts over four seasons (2019, ’21-23) in the White Sox system. He originally was selected by the Sox in the second round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft.

Scholtens, 28, is scheduled to undergo surgery on Friday. He went 1-9 with a 5.29 ERA (50 ER/85.0 IP) and 58 strikeouts in 26 appearances (11 starts) for Chicago last season.

Following the moves, the White Sox 40-man roster remains at 40.
