Former Rockies Vinny Castilla, LaTroy Hawkins to manage SiriusXM All-Star Futures teams
Two-time All-Star and longtime Colorado Rockies third baseman Vinny Castilla and longtime Major League reliever LaTroy Hawkins will serve as managers during the 2021 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game on Sunday, July 11th at Coors Field, as was announced earlier today on MLB Network. The 2021 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, which features the top Minor League prospects competing as part of All-Star Sunday, will mark the 22nd installment of the contest. The remainder of the coaching staffs, as well as rosters and umpires for the game, will be announced in the coming weeks.
The Futures Game will once again feature a National League vs. American League format, which was introduced in 2019 following 20 years of U.S. vs. World match-ups. The game, which is scheduled for seven innings, will begin at 3:00 p.m. (ET)/1:00 p.m. (MT) exclusively on MLB Network and simulcast on MLB.com, and will be followed by the All-Star Celebrity Softball Game at Coors Field. The 2019 Futures Game at Progressive Field in Cleveland finished in a 2-2 tie after eight innings following MVP Sam Huff’s game-tying two-run homer in the seventh inning, which forced the extra inning.
Castilla, who will lead the NL Futures squad, played 16 seasons in the Majors for the Atlanta Braves (1991-92, 2002-03), Rockies (1993-99, 2004, 2006), Tampa Bay Devil Rays (2000-01), Houston Astros (2001), Washington Nationals (2005) and San Diego Padres (2006). In 1,854 career games, the native of Oaxaca, Mexico hit .276 with 1,884 hits, 320 home runs, 1,105 RBI and 349 doubles. A member of Colorado’s famed “Blake Street Bombers” and one of the most popular players in Rockies history, Castilla was drafted by Colorado from Atlanta with the 40th pick in the 1992 Expansion Draft. He ranks among the top-10 career leaders in Rockies history in games, at-bats, runs, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, extra-base hits and total bases. Across five seasons from 1995-99, Castilla batted .302 while averaging 38 home runs and 112 RBI per season, including a career-best 46 homers and 144 RBI in 1998. In 17 career Postseason games, Castilla hit .350 with five homers and 12 RBI. The all-time home run leader among Mexican-born players was named to the NL All-Star Team twice (1995 and 1998) and won three Silver Slugger Awards at third base (1995, 1997-98). Castilla, who managed Mexico’s national team at the 2007 Pan American Games and at the 2009 World Baseball Classic, is currently in his 14th season as a Special Assistant to the General Manager for the Rockies.
Hawkins, who will manage the AL Futures Team, pitched 21 seasons in the Majors for the Minnesota Twins (1995-2003), Chicago Cubs (2004-05), San Francisco Giants (2005), Baltimore Orioles (2006), Rockies (2007, 2014-15), New York Yankees (2008), Astros (2008-09), Milwaukee Brewers (2010-11), Los Angeles Angels (2012), New York Mets (2013) and Toronto Blue Jays (2015). He compiled a career record of 75-94 with 127 saves and a 4.31 ERA over 1,042 games pitched, including 98 starts. In 1,467.1 innings pitched, the right-hander collected 983 strikeouts with 456 walks. The native of Gary, Indiana was drafted by Minnesota in the seventh round of the 1991 MLB Draft out of West Side H.S. Following back-to-back seasons of 33 starts apiece in 1998 and 1999, Hawkins transitioned into a bullpen role for the 2000 season, compiling a 3.39 ERA with 14 saves over 66 appearances before converting a career-best 28 saves a season later in 2001. Hawkins appeared in at least 60 games in 10 different seasons and his 1,042 career games pitched rank 10th all-time in Major League history. In 2015, Hawkins became the 13th pitcher in Major League history to record a save against all 30 teams when he closed out a win over the Twins while pitching for Toronto. Hawkins has served as a Special Assistant, Baseball Operations for the Twins since 2016 and also contributes as an analyst on Bally Sports North for select Twins home games.
