Three Astros Named Finalists in Today’s All-Star Balloting Update
HOUSTON, TX - Major League Baseball announced today the finalists advancing to Phase 2 of the voting process for the 2024 MLB All-Star Game presented by Mastercard. Three Astros were named as finalists at their respective positions: 2B Jose Altuve, DH Yordan Alvarez and OF Kyle Tucker. The Astros (3) joined the Orioles (6) as the only AL team with three-plus representatives on the final ballot.
The second phase of the 2024 MLB All-Star voting will begin at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday, June 30, with fans voting among the finalists at each position during a window that concludes at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3. Later that night, the winners will be announced on ESPN at 7 p.m. during the All-Star Starters Reveal presented by BuildSubmarines.com. The balance of the All-Star rosters will be announced during the All-Star Selection Show presented by BuildSubmarines.com on Sunday, July 7 at 4:30 p.m. on ESPN.
During this second phase of voting, in which fans can vote once per day on MLB platforms, vote totals will reset (i.e., vote totals from Phase 1 do not carry over) and the winner at each position (including three outfielders per League) will be named a starting position player for the 2024 Midsummer Classic.
Altuve, who led all Astros in votes with 1,976,539, is an eight-time All-Star, earning five fan elections (2015-18; 2022) in his esteemed career. Should he earn a sixth fan election, he would join Hall of Famers Rod Carew (6) and Roberto Alomar (9) as the only AL second basemen to accomplish the feat. Altuve is off to another stellar season, hitting .303 (99x327) with 16 doubles, 12 homers, 35 RBI, 13 stolen bases and an .812 OPS in 79 games.
Alvarez is looking for his first starting assignment after making the AL team as a reserve in 2022 and 2023. With a fan election, he would become the first Houston DH to win the honor. The Astros designated hitter and left fielder is hitting .288 (85x295) with 17 doubles, 16 homers, 41 RBI and an .876 OPS in 77 games this season.
Tucker, like Alvarez, is a two-time All-Star (2022-23), looking for his first fan election. Should he be elected, Tucker would become the first Houston outfielder win a starting assignment since 2019, when both George Springer and Michael Brantley picked up the honor. Tucker has been in the AL MVP conversation this season, hitting .266 (57x214) with 11 doubles, 19 homers, 40 RBI, 10 stolen bases and a .979 OPS in 60 games.
Five other Astros also appeared among the top vote-getters in MLB’s Phase 1 update: 3B Alex Bregman (4th), SS Jeremy Peña (6th), 1B Jon Singleton (6th), C Yainer Diaz (7th) and OF Mauricio Dubón (13th).
The Astros are looking to continue their run of having at least three All-Stars in every All-Star game since the 2017 season. The Astros 30 All-Star selections since 2017 are the most of any AL club in that span.
