Texas Rangers Youth Academy teams complete day one of 2022 MLB RBI Southwest Regional Tournament
DALLAS --The first day of the MLB RBI Southwest Regional Baseball and Softball Tournament has concluded. The Texas Rangers Youth Academy teams won four games across three divisions -- 18U baseball, 15U baseball, and 18U softball.
Rangers RBI softball finished the first full day of play with a 2-0 record after defeating RBI YA NOLA and RBI Austin in back-to-back games.
In their first game of pool play versus New Orleans, the team won 9-4 in six innings. Ximena Zamarron, a Paris Junior College commit, went 2-4 with a solo home run, and starting pitcher Gio Frias secured the win on the mound with four strikeouts.
They completed the double header with an 11-1 victory over RBI Austin, which is under the direction of head coach and three-time Olympic medalist Cat Osterman. Zamarron continued to dominate on offense, going 4-5 with an inside the park two-run home run. Hannah Pacheco was 2-3 at the plate with two runs scored, and Ariana Ortiz was a perfect 4-4.
The Rangers RBI 18U Senior Baseball team finished 2-0 with an 11-4 victory over NOLA YA RBI and a 3-0 win over Astros RBI.
On offense, Mountain View College commit Anthony Winters (3-3, 2 3B), Oklahoma University commit Austin Phillips (4-5, R), and Grambling State University commit Chris Marcellus (4-4, 3 R) contributed to the team’s 11 runs in their victory against New Orleans.
In their game against Astros RBI, starting pitcher Jacob Ayala threw five scoreless innings with four strikeouts, and John Sanchez threw two scoreless innings for the save. Phillips went 2-3 with one run scored, and Zeke Velasquez and Steven Ramos both finished 1-3 at the plate.
Rangers RBI 15U Junior Baseball finished the day without a win, losing 4-3 to NOLA YA RBI and 8-2 to Astros RBI.
In their first game against New Orleans, Will Carrigan went 2-4 with a stolen base, and catcher Jackson Morris was 2-4 at the plate. Pitcher Kaleb Thompkins threw four strikeouts in his two-inning appearance on the mound.
In their loss against the Astros, 2022 Jr. Home Run Derby finalist Maddox Johnson went 2-3, and catcher Isaac Casas went 2-3 with a double.
Tomorrow, July 24, Rangers RBI Softball will begin play at 9 a.m., when they face three-time defending RBI World Series champions Astros RBI. Both junior and senior baseball teams will face RBI Austin in their first games, beginning at 11 a.m.
