Texas Rangers sign right-handed pitcher Brock Porter, club's second selection in 2022 MLB Draft
Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Brock Porter, the team’s second overall selection (fourth round, 109th overall) in last week’s 2022 Major League Baseball Draft.
“Brock Porter was arguably the top high school pitcher in the nation this spring, and we are delighted to have him join the Rangers’ organization,” said Executive Vice President and General Manager Chris Young. “He has great makeup and outstanding stuff, and it’s exciting to project his future growth and development. We have added two elite pitching prospects in Brock and Kumar Rocker at the top of our 2022 draft.”
The 19-year-old Porter was named 2021-22 Gatorade National High School Baseball Player of the Year after going 9-0 with three no-hitters, a 0.41 ERA, and 115 strikeouts over 58.0 innings this spring as a senior at St. Mary’s Prep in Orchard Lake, Michigan. The 6-foot-4, 208-pound right-hander led the Eagles to the Division 2 state championships in 2019 and 2021 before finishing a perfect 44-0 season with a Division 1 state title in 2022. St. Mary’s was tabbed as Baseball America’s High School National Champion in 2021, and currently holds a 65-game winning streak spanning the last two years.
Porter was rated as a top-15 prospect in the 2022 class by multiple outlets, including MLB Pipeline (11), Baseball America (12), and FanGraphs (14). The Milford, Mich. native is the first Gatorade National High School Baseball Player of the Year ever drafted by Texas.
With today’s signing, Texas has eight of the 18 players selected in last week’s MLB draft under contract, including its top two selections.
