Electric Play of the Week presented by Chevrolet

Game-Saving Long Run and Diving Catch By Trey Sweeney of the Detroit Tigers

September 21st at Camden Yards – Watch It Here

Rookie shortstop Trey Sweeney of the Detroit Tigers earned his first career Play of the Week Award, marking the second honor for Detroit this season after Javier Báez won on June 3rd for his diving stop and long throw. Overall, it is the eighth win for the Tigers and the second time they have won multiple awards in a season after Riley Greene claimed three awards in 2022. With the game tied and one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Sweeney and the infield played in with the potential winning run at third base as Anthony Santander hit a blooper behind third base, forcing Sweeney to race back and make the catch before colliding hard with Greene in short left field for the second out of the frame. Additional Play of the Week candidates included Parker Meadows’ home run robbery; Joey Ortiz’s diving snag and throw across the diamond; Michael Busch’s leaping grab over the tarp; Oneil Cruz’s diving catch; Grae Kessinger’s game-ending diving stop; Jason Heyward’s game-ending grab; and Mark Vientos’ leaping grab.
