Reid Detmers, Bryce Harper named Players of the Week presented by Chevrolet

Starting pitcher Reid Detmers of the Los Angeles Angels, who tossed his first career no-hitter on Tuesday, has been chosen the American League Player of the Week presented by Chevrolet, and All-Star outfielder Bryce Harper of the Philadelphia Phillies has been named the National League Player of the Week presented by Chevrolet. The announcements were made earlier today on MLB Network.

Detmers earned his first career Player of the Week Award and is the second Angels winner this season, following Taylor Ward two weeks ago. Reid is the first Angels hurler (excluding two-way players) to win AL Player of the Week since Matt Shoemaker in July 2016. Harper claimed his seventh career Player of the Week Award and his first with the Phillies, most recently taking home weekly honors in September 2018 with the Washington Nationals. Bryce is Philadelphia’s first winner since Jay Bruce in June 2019.

Other noteworthy AL performances for the week included All-Star outfielder Giancarlo Stanton (.417, 6 R, 4 HR, 12 RBI) and starting pitcher Nestor Cortes (1-0, 0.59 ERA, 19 SO, 4 H) of the New York Yankees; starter Tarik Skubal (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 13.0 IP, 16 SO) of the Detroit Tigers; All-Star starter Justin Verlander (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 13.0 IP, 3 H) of the Houston Astros; All-Star third baseman Rafael Devers (.409, 6 R, 7 XBH, 8 RBI) of the Boston Red Sox; and Detmers’ All-Star teammate Shohei Ohtani (.345, 4 HR, 10 RBI; 6.0 IP, 1 ER).

Second baseman Tony Kemp of the Oakland Athletics earned his second career Play of the Week Award, previously doing so last year for the week ending May 23rd. Oakland’s most recent winner was Matt Chapman in August of last season. In the bottom of the eighth inning against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park, Kemp made a fully extended diving catch to rob Jeimer Candelario of a base hit. Additional Play of the Week candidates included José Ramírez's diving stop and throw to prevent a game-winning run in the ninth inning; Nick Gordon’s diving catch in deep right-center field; Steven Souza Jr.’s leaping grab in deep right field; David Peralta’s jumping catch into the outfield wall; and Bryson Stott’s leaping grab at shortstop.
