Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

Boston’s 40-Man Roster is now at 40.

Sims, 30, was acquired from the Cincinnati Reds yesterday in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Ovis Portes. The right-hander has posted a 3.57 ERA (14 ER/35.1 IP) with 40 strikeouts and 20 walks in 43 games with the Reds this season, including a 2.25 ERA (6 ER/24.0 IP) in his last 30 outings since May 10. He ranks in Major League Baseball’s 95th percentile in average exit velocity (86.1 MPH), as well as the 74th percentile in strikeout rate (26.0%). Originally selected by the Atlanta Braves in the first round (No. 21 overall) of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, he is 22-17 with a 4.41 ERA (143 ER/292.0 IP) in 230 career games (14 starts) with the Braves (2017-18) and Reds (2018-24).

Sogard, 26, has batted .279 (96-for-344) with an .832 OPS, 62 runs scored, 16 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs, and 10 stolen bases in 89 games for Worcester. The switch-hitter has made starts this season at shortstop (47 games), third base (19 games), right field (seven games), left field (six games), second base (five games), first base (two games) and designated hitter (one game). Originally selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 12th round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft, the California native was acquired by Boston in a four-player trade on February 17, 2021. He has played in 469 minor league games, batting .271 (446-for-1,647) with 283 runs scored, 76 doubles, nine triples, and 36 home runs.

Westbrook, 29, has played in 21 games for the Red Sox this season, his Major League debut. He has made 13 starts at second base, also appearing in one game in right field and one at third base. The right-handed hitter has batted .150 (6-for-40) with two doubles, two home runs, seven RBI, and four walks. The Holyoke, Massachusetts native has also played in 49 games for Worcester this season, batting .282 (59-for-209) with 32 runs scored and 43 RBI while making 24 starts at third base, 15 in right field, eight at second base, seven as the designated hitter, and four at first base.

Ramírez, 29, pitched last night against the Seattle Mariners. The right-hander owns a 6.20 ERA (31 ER/45.0 IP) in 38 games this season with the New York Mets (five games), Baltimore Orioles (five games), Los Angeles Dodgers (27 games), and Red Sox (one game). Originally signed by the Houston Astros as an international free agent in July 2016, the Dominican Republic native owns a 4.58 ERA (86 ER/169.0 IP) in 140 career games with the Seattle Mariners (2020-22), Cleveland Guardians (2022), Pittsburgh Pirates (2022-23), Chicago White Sox (2023), Mets (2024), Orioles (2024), Dodgers (2024), and Red Sox (2024).
