Red Sox Acquire Catcher Tyler Heineman From New York Mets

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today acquired catcher Tyler Heineman from the New York Mets, in exchange for cash considerations. To make room on the 40-man roster, Boston designated right-handed pitcher Max Castillo for assignment.

Heineman, 32, split the 2023 season between the Pittsburgh Pirates (three games) and the Toronto Blue Jays (19 games), making 16 starts as the catcher and batting .237 (9-for-38). The switch-hitter also played in 42 Triple-A games during 2023 with Indianapolis and Buffalo. Originally selected by the Houston Astros in the eighth round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, the California Native has played in 104 career Major League games with the Miami Marlins (2019), San Francisco Giants (2020), Blue Jays (2022-23), and Pirates (2022-23), batting .218 (54-for-248) with 11 doubles while throwing out 19 of 68 (27.9%) runners attempting to steal.

Castillo, 24, was claimed off waivers from the Kansas City Royals on January 2. Signed by the Blue Jays as an international free agent in 2015, the Venezuela native owns a 5.43 ERA (36 ER/59.2 IP) in 21 career Major League games (six starts) with Toronto (2022) and Kansas City (2022-23).
