Plans for inaugural MLB Draft Lottery announced

Major League Baseball today announced the plans for the inaugural MLB Draft Lottery, which will be held on Tuesday, December 6th from the Winter Meetings in San Diego, with exclusive live coverage on MLB Network. Under the new collective bargaining agreement, the first six selections in the 2023 First-Year Player Draft will be awarded to Clubs via the Lottery, shaping the order of the top 18 choices overall. The announcement was made as MLB’s General Managers Meetings get underway today in Las Vegas, Nevada.

All Clubs that did not qualify for the Postseason in the 2022 Championship Season (and who have not forfeited their first-round selection by operation of the Basic Agreement, Major League Rules, or Major League Constitution) will be eligible for the 2023 Lottery. Each eligible Club’s odds of receiving the top overall selection in the 2023 Draft are as follows:

The Lottery results will be revealed exclusively on MLB Network during a half-hour show starting at 8:30 p.m. (ET)/5:30 p.m. (PT) from San Diego with Greg Amsinger, Dan O’Dowd and Harold Reynolds. MLB Network has provided live coverage of the First-Year Player Draft every year since 2009.
