Pirates claim outfielder Trey Cabbage off waivers from Houston and announce additional roster moves
The Pittsburgh Pirates today reinstated right-handed pitchers Dauri Moreta, Johan Oviedo and Hunter Stratton and catcher/infielder Endy Rodríguez from the 60-day injured list.
Right-handed pitchers Ben Heller, Daulton Jefferies and Isaac Mattson have been removed from the 40-man roster after clearing waivers.
On Saturday, the Pirates declined the club option on left-handed pitcher Marco Gonzales. Gonzales is now a free agent.
Today the Pirates claimed outfielder Trey Cabbage off waivers from the Houston Astros.
Cabbage hit .209 (18-for-86) with eight doubles, one home run and eight RBI in 45 games in 2024 with the Astros.
He also hit .243 (60-for-247) with 12 doubles, three triples, 13 home runs, 43 RBI and 22 stolen bases this past season with Triple-A Sugar Land.
Cabbage was originally selected by Minnesota in the fourth round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft.
The left-handed hitting Cabbage made his big league debut in 2023 with the Angels on July 14 while playing in a total of 22 games with Los Angeles that season.
He also hit .306 (128-for-418) with 25 doubles, 30 home runs, 89 RBI, 32 stolen bases and a .975 OPS with Triple-A Salt Lake in 2023 while being named Los Angeles’ (AL) MiLB.com Hitting Prospect of the Year.
Cabbage has made 34 appearances (20 starts) in right field, 14 appearances (seven starts) in left field, two appearances (one start) in center field and nine appearances (eight starts) at first base in his big league career.
There are now 38 players on Pittsburgh’s 40-man roster.
