Phillies select Noah Song in 2022 MLB Rule 5 Draft

The Phillies have selected right-hander Noah Song from the Boston Red Sox in the 2022 MLB Rule 5 Draft, Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski announced today.

Song, 25, has not pitched professionally since 2019, which was his first professional season. That year, he made seven starts for short-season A Lowell, posting a 1.06 ERA (2 ER, 17.0 IP) with 19 strikeouts to five walks. He also allowed just 10 hits, holding opponents to a .167 batting average and .431 OPS.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound righty is a 2019 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. He was originally selected by Boston in the fourth round of the 2019 MLB Draft. During his four-year collegiate career with the Naval Academy, he went 32-13 with a 2.37 ERA in 58 games (54 starts) while recording 428 strikeouts in 334.1 innings pitched. Song also tossed 14 complete games, including nine shutouts. As a senior, he went 11-1 with a 1.44 ERA (15 ER, 94.0 IP) and had 161 strikeouts in 14 starts while limiting opponents to a .171 batting average. That year, he led all qualifying NCAA Division I pitchers in strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched (15.41).

The Phillies have placed Song on the military list as he continues his active duty service with the Navy. He will not count toward the club’s 40-man roster at this time.
