Phillies recall Tyler Gilbert, option Seth Johnson

Prior to tonight’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Phillies recalled left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert from triple-A Lehigh Valley. To make room for Gilbert on the 28-man roster, right-handed pitcher Seth Johnson was optioned to Lehigh Valley.

Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Gilbert, 30, rejoins the Phillies for his second stint with the club this season. On Aug. 23 at Kansas City, he allowed one run over 2.0 innings with one strikeout in his only outing for the Phillies in 2024. A native of Santa Cruz, Calif., Gilbert has posted a 2.25 ERA (10 ER, 40.0 IP) with 52 strikeouts over 31 relief appearances for the IronPigs this year. The left-hander began the year in the Cincinnati Reds organization, and he was acquired by the Phillies in a minor league trade with Cincinnati on May 7. He was originally selected by Philadelphia in the sixth round of the 2015 MLB Draft.

The 25-year-old Johnson pitched 2.1 innings in his major league debut yesterday at Miami. The Concord, N.C., native was named Phillies Co-Minor League Pitcher of the Month for August after going 2-1 with a 1.52 ERA (4 ER, 23.2 IP) and 22 strikeouts over five starts with double-A Reading and Lehigh Valley. Originally selected by Tampa Bay in the first round (Competitive Balance Round A, 40^th overall) of the 2019 MLB Draft, Johnson was acquired by the Phillies in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles on July 30, 2024.
