Phillies recall Kennedy, option Gilbert to Spring Training complex

Prior to today’s game against the Washington Nationals, the Phillies recalled infielder Buddy Kennedy from the spring training complex. To make room for him on the 28-man roster, left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert was optioned to the spring training complex.

Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Kennedy, 25, who was optioned on Sept. 17, slashed .200/.333/.300 (.633 OPS) in seven games (12 plate appearances) in his first two stints with the Phillies this year. The Millville High School graduate was originally selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the fifth round of the 2017 MLB Draft and was acquired by the Phillies in a trade with the Detroit Tigers on June 7.

Gilbert, 30, has posted a 3.24 ERA (3 ER, 8.1 IP) in six games over two stints for the Phillies this year. With Philadelphia, three of his six appearances have been 2.0 innings. The left-hander began the year in the Cincinnati Reds organization, and he was acquired by the Phillies in a minor league trade with Cincinnati on May 7. He was originally selected by Philadelphia in the sixth round of the 2015 MLB Draft.
