Phillies recall Johnson; place Sosa on 10-day injured list

Prior to today’s game against the Miami Marlins, the Phillies recalled right-handed pitcher Seth Johnson from triple-A Lehigh Valley. To make room for him on the 28-man roster, infielder Edmundo Sosa was placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to Sept. 7) with back spasms.

Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Johnson, 25, was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles along with right-handed pitcher Moisés Chace on July 30 in exchange for left-handed pitcher Gregory Soto. Johnson made two starts for double-A Reading before being promoted to Lehigh Valley on Aug. 13. A native of Concord, N.C., Johnson has gone 2-1 with a 1.52 ERA (4 ER, 23.2 IP), 0.85 WHIP, 22 strikeouts to seven walks and a .155 opponents’ batting average across five starts between the Fightin Phils and IronPigs, enroute to being named Phillies Co-Minor League Pitcher of the Month for August.

Johnson was originally selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the first round (Competitive Balance Round A, 40th overall) of the 2019 MLB Draft. Today’s start will be his major league debut. He will wear No. 51.

Sosa, 28, is slashing .264/.319/.437 (.756 OPS) with seven home runs and a career-high-tying 30 RBI over his 83 games this season. Defensively, the Panama native has appeared at shortstop (46 games, 38 starts), third base (21 games, 11 starts) and second base (17 games, 14 starts).

Named the Phillies’ nominee for the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association Heart and Hustle Award this season, Sosa has appeared in 265 games for the Phillies since being acquired via trade from the St. Louis Cardinals on July 30, 2022 and has slashed .249/.297/.415 (.713 OPS) with 66 extra-base hits and 81 RBI. He was originally signed by the Cardinals as an amateur free agent on July 2, 2012.
