Phillies Place Hays on Injured List; Recall Stevenson

Prior to tonight’s game against the Miami Marlins, the Phillies placed outfielder Austin Hays on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to 9/2) with a kidney infection. To fill his spot on the 28-man roster, the club recalled outfielder Cal Stevenson from triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Since being acquired via trade from the Baltimore Orioles on July 26, Hays, 29, has appeared in 19 games for the Phillies and has hit .254 (17-67) with five doubles, one home run, five RBI and seven runs scored. Against left-handed pitchers, the Florida native has posted a .438 batting average (7-16) with four doubles. Between both clubs this season, Hays has slashed .254/.305/.388 (.693 OPS) in 82 games.

He was originally selected by the Orioles in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft.

Stevenson, 27, rejoins the Phillies for his second major league stint this season. Over his first seven games, he hit .200 (2-10) with two walks and one RBI. Defensively, he appeared in four games in center field (two starts) and two games in right field. With the IronPigs this year, the left-handed-batting Stevenson has hit .302 (97-321) with 25 doubles, five triples, eight home runs, 44 RBI, 68 runs scored and 29 stolen bases in 101 games. His .421 on-base percentage and .907 OPS rank second and third, respectively, in the International League among qualified batters.

Originally selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 10th round of the 2018 MLB Draft, Stevenson was claimed off waivers by the Phillies from the San Francisco Giants on May 26, 2023.
