Phillies acquire Stubbs from Astros

The Phillies have acquired catcher Garrett Stubbs from the Houston Astros in exchange for outfielder Logan Cerny, President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski announced tonight.

Stubbs, 28, split time between triple-A Sugar Land and Houston in 2021, appearing in 56 total games. In 37 games with Sugar Land, he batted .265 with a .418 on-base percentage, walking more times (30) than he struck out (29). Stubbs caught 14 games (seven starts) for Houston in 2021, throwing out both attempted base stealers. He has thrown out three of seven attempted base stealers in 33 major league games at catcher and has played errorless baseball in 13 major league games in the outfield. Stubbs was originally an eighth-round selection by Houston in the 2015 MLB Draft.

Cerny, 22, was a 10th-round selection by the Phillies out of Troy University in the 2021 MLB Draft. He batted .200 in 13 total games between the rookie-level Florida Complex League Phillies and single-A Clearwater in his first professional season.

With this trade, along with the previously announced trade with New York and four other roster additions, the Phillies 40-man roster stands at 39 players.
