Miami Marlins agree to terms with free agent infielder Eric Wagaman
MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today announced that the club has agreed to terms with free agent infielder Eric Wagaman on a one-year Major League contract. To make room for Wagaman on the club’s 40-man roster, infielder Vidal Bruján has been designated for assignment.
Wagaman, 27, made his MLB debut last season, appearing in 18 games with the Los Angeles Angels and posting a .250/.270/.403 (18x72) slashline with five doubles, two home runs and 10 RBI. With the Angels, he made 17 starts at third base, while also appearing in one game in left field. He spent a majority of 2024 in the Angels Minor League system, beginning with Double-A Rocket City before earning a promotion to Triple-A Salt Lake.
In 94 games with Rocket City, the right-handed hitter posted a .260 AVG (90x346) and .795 OPS, with 23 doubles, two triples, 14 home runs, 46 RBI, and nine stolen bases to earn Southern League Post-Season All-Star honors. Following his promotion, he appeared in 27 games with Salt Lake, batting .320 with an .855 OPS, recording five doubles, two triples, three home runs, and 14 RBI in his short stint. The Angels selected Wagaman sixth overall from the New York Yankees in the Minor League phase of the 2023 Rule 5 Draft.
The native of Mission Viejo, Calif., was selected by the Yankees in the 13th round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of Orange Coast College (Costa Mesa, Calif.). In his seven years with the Yankees organization, Wagaman combined for a .241/.312/.388 (331x1375) slashline, with 41 home runs and 170 RBI, in 393 games. With Double-A Somerset, he hit .320 (39x122) with an .882 OPS across 35 games in 2023, and .340 (18x53) with a 1.020 OPS across 17 games in 2022. Across his 514 career games in the Minors, Wagaman spent most of his time at first base (341 games), while also playing right field (39), third base (31), and left field (5).
Bruján, 26, appeared in a career-high 102 games with Miami last season, batting .222 (55x248) with a .622 OPS and five stolen bases. He also set career highs in runs (32), hits (55), doubles (14), triples (two), and walks (two), while tying his career high with 16 RBI. Of his 102 games, he made 68 starts: 25 starts at shortstop, 22 at third base, nine in center field, eight at third base, and four in right field.
