Miami Marlins acquire LHP Jesús Luzardo from Oakland Athletics

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today acquired LHP Jesús Luzardo from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for OF Starling Marte and cash considerations.

Luzardo, 23, has appeared in 13 games this season for the Athletics, including six starts, going 2-4 with a 6.87 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 38.0 innings. He was 3-2 with a 4.12 ERA in 2020, ranking second amongst Major League rookies in strikeouts and innings pitched with 59 K’s in 59.0 innings. In parts of three Major League seasons, Luzardo is 5-6 with a 4.79 ERA in 31 games (15 starts). He has also notched two saves.

He is 16-9 with a 3.04 ERA in 54 career Minor League games (51 starts). He has struck out 260 hitters in 224.2 innings. Before exceeding his rookie limits in 2020, Luzardo was rated the No. 9 overall prospect by Baseball America and No. 12 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline.

Luzardo, born in Lima, Peru, was selected in the third-round (94th overall) by Washington in 2016 from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.
