Mets sign All-Star RHP Jorge López
FLUSHING, N.Y., December 14, 2023 – The New York Mets announced today that the club has signed All-Star right-handed pitcher Jorge López to a one-year contract.
López, 30, spent the 2023 season between the Minnesota Twins, Miami Marlins and Baltimore Orioles where he totaled a 6-2 record with three saves and a 5.95 ERA (39 ER/59.0 IP) over 61 appearances. Since 2022, his 52.7% ground ball rate is the 20th-best mark among qualified relief pitchers.
The eight-year major league veteran was named to the 2022 American League All-Star team after pitching to a 2.54 ERA (20 ER/71.0 IP) over a career-high 71 games with Minnesota and Baltimore. His 23 saves that season ranked seventh in the American League, while his 1.62 ERA (8 ER/44.0 IP) prior to the All-Star Game ranked eighth among American League relief pitchers (min. 30.0 IP).
In 230 career major league games (58 starts), the Caguas, Puerto Rico native has posted a 22-40 record with a 5.51 ERA (294 ER/480.0 IP), 418 strikeouts and 27 saves as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers (2015, 2017-2018), Kansas City Royals (2018-2020), Baltimore Orioles (2020-2023), Minnesota Twins (2022-2023) and Miami Marlins (2023). López pitched for Team Puerto Rico in both the 2017 and 2023 World Baseball Classics.
López was originally selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the second round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of Caguas Military Academy in Puerto Rico.
