Mariners name Michael Huie assistant groundskeeper
The Seattle Mariners today announced that Michael Huie, who has served the last five years as head groundskeeper for the Tacoma Rainiers, has been named Assistant Groundskeeper.
Prior to being named head groundskeeper for the Rainiers in 2015, Huie was briefly a member of the Mariners seasonal grounds crew at T-Mobile Park during the 2015 season. While in Tacoma, Huie managed the needs of the Mariners AAA Affiliate as well as a pair of professional soccer teams that call Cheney Stadium home: Reign FC of the National Women's Soccer League and Tacoma Defiance, the USL Championship squad for Seattle Sounders FC.
“Michael and his team were able to successfully manage the near constant conversion of the field at Cheney Stadium between baseball and soccer while meeting all three teams’ needs. His experience and knowledge of maintaining fields at a very high level make him a great addition to the T-Mobile Park team,” said Tim Wilson, Seattle Mariners Director of Grounds.
Huie graduated from the Turf Management program at Walla Walla Community College. He has worked for various minor league facilities with increasing responsibility. He has also spent time managing the grounds at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida, and with the Baltimore Orioles as a member of the grounds crew at Orioles Park at Camden Yards.
Huie enjoys golfing and camping. He and his wife Jessica live in Renton. They welcomed their first child, daughter Chandler Brooke Huie, on December 19.
