Juan Soto, Brandon Lowe named Players of the Week presented by Chevrolet

Twenty-one-year-old outfielder Juan Soto of the Washington Nationals has been chosen the National League Player of the Week presented by Chevrolet,and All-Star second baseman Brandon Lowe of the Tampa Bay Rays has been named the American League Player of the Week presented by Chevrolet. The announcements were made earlier today on MLB Network.

Soto earned his first career NL Player of the Week Award and is the first Nationals winner since his former All-Star teammate Anthony Rendon last season for the period ending August 25th. Juan became the first Washington outfielder to do so since All-Star Bryce Harper in September 2018. Lowe also claimed his first career weekly award and is the first Rays winner since his All-Star teammate Austin Meadows last year for the week ending September 8th.

Infielder David Fletcher of the Los Angeles Angels earned his first career Play of the Week honor and is the first Angels player to accomplish the feat since the award was introduced in 2019. With one out in the top of the fourth inning of Wednesday night’s tilt against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Fletcher made a backhanded stop before delivering an off-balance throw across the diamond to retire the speedy Mookie Betts. Additional Play of the Week candidates included Shogo Akiyama’s leaping catch at the wall to rob an extra-base hit; Ian Happ’s diving catch on a slicing line drive in left field; Chad Pinder’s reaching-over-the-wall catch in foul territory; Jon Berti’s sliding catch before doubling up the runner at first; and Jurickson Profar’s diving catch in shallow left field.
