Rangers place Eli White on 10-day injured list, select contract of INF Yonny Hernandez from Round Rock

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced the following roster moves prior to Thursday’s homestand finale against the Los Angeles Angels:

• Outfielder Eli White placed on 10-day Injured List, retroactive to August 4, with a right elbow strain.

• Infielder Yonny Hernandez (#65) contract selected from Round Rock (AAA).

• Outfielder Willie Calhoun transferred from 10-day to 60-day Injured List.

• Outfielder Delino DeShields traded to Boston Red Sox in exchange for cash considerations.

White has batted .177 with 6 home runs and 15 RBI over 64 games spanning three stints with the Rangers this season: Opening Day-May 7, May 9-13, and June 8-present. He is in his second Major League season after being acquired by the Rangers from the Oakland Athletics in a three-team trade on December 21, 2018.

Hernandez, 23, will be in uniform today seeking his Major League debut. He has spent the entire season with Round Rock, batting .250/.424/.323/.747 (48-192) with one home run, 13 RBI, and 51 walks against 44 strikeouts. He leads Triple-A West with 51 walks and 21 stolen bases, ranking 5th with a .424 on-base percentage. Hernandez has reached safely via hit, walk, or hit by pitch in 24 of his last 25 games beginning July 3, batting .280 (23-82) with a .449 on-base percentage and .839 OPS figure over that span.

Originally signed by the Rangers as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2014, the Venezuela native has seen Spring Training action with the Major League club in each of the last three years, including 16 games with the Rangers this past spring. He briefly left the Round Rock club in late May/early June this season to play for Team Venezuela in an Olympic qualifying tournament in Florida. He hit .293 with 4 doubles and 7 RBI over 12 games for the Round Rock Alternate Site club prior to the start of the minor league season this year.

Calhoun was placed on the Injured List on June 27 with a left forearm ulna bone fracture suffered when he was hit by a pitch from the Royals’ Kris Bubic on June 26 vs. Kansas City. He has batted .254 with 5 home runs and 19 RBI in 59 games for the Rangers this season.

DeShields has spent the entire season on assignment at Round Rock after being a non-roster invitee to the Rangers Major League Spring Training camp. With the Express this season, he has batted .263 with 5 home runs and 18 RBI in 66 games.

Following today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster, along with eight players on the 60-day Injured List.
