D-backs select the contract of Matt Grace from alternate training site; place Andrew Chafin on 10-day injured list

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks selected the contract of LHP Matt Grace from the Alternate Training Site and placed LHP Andrew Chafin on the 10-day injured list (left finger sprain). The D-backs’ active roster is at 28. The D-backs’ 40-man roster is at 40.

Grace, 31, has appeared in 178 games for the Washington Nationals over the past 5 seasons, posting a 5-4 record and 4.29 ERA (84 ER in 176.1 IP) with 132 strikeouts. The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder was signed as a free agent on Nov. 5, 2019.

He issued just 10 walks in 51 games last season, tied for the fourth fewest in the Majors among pitchers with at least 50 appearances. He did not allow a homer to his first 308 left-handed batters in the big leagues.

Chafin, 30, has appeared in 11 games for Arizona this season, posting a 1-1 record and 8.10 ERA (6 ER in 6.2 IP).
