Brenton Doyle and Ezequiel Tovar named National League Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners

DENVER – It was announced by Rawlings and Major League Baseball this evening that Rockies center fielder Brenton Doyle and shortstop Ezequiel Tovar have been named recipients of the 2024 National League Rawlings Gold Glove Award at their respective positions.

Per Elias, at 23-years-and-60-days-old at the end of the season Tovar is the youngest shortstop to win a Gold Glove in National League history and the second youngest in franchise history overall behind Nolan Arenado in 2013 (22-167d). It is the first career Gold Glove Award for Tovar and the second consecutive award for Doyle. Together, they are the first pair of Rockies to take home a Gold Glove in the same season since Arenado (3B) and DJ LeMahieu (2B) in 2018 and the first infielder/outfielder pair to do so since Arenado and Carlos González in 2013.

Doyle, 26, is the first outfielder in NL history and the third outfielder all-time to win a Gold Glove in each of his first two Major League seasons (per Elias), joining Cleveland’s Steven Kwan (2022-23) and Seattle’s Ichiro Suzuki (2001-02). He is also the first Rockie to win a Gold Glove in consecutive seasons since Arenado (2013-20) and the first Rockies outfielder to do so since González (2012-2013). In 2024, his 16 outs above average were tied for second among Major League outfielders while his 14 runs prevented tied for fourth. Additionally, his 11 defensive runs saved finished tied for the third-most among Major League center fielders (min. 1000 innings played). Dating back to 2023, his 31 outs above average are the most among Major League outfielders while his 29 defensive runs saved are the second-most. In addition to his Gold Glove, Doyle was named Sports Info Solutions Fielding Bible Award winner at center field after being named the runner up in 2023.

Along with his defensive efforts, Doyle slashed .260/.317/.446 with 24 doubles, four triples, 23 home runs, 72 RBI and 30 swiped bags in 2024, the seventh Rockie in franchise history to have at least two seasons with 25+ extra-base hits and 20+ stolen bases. Additionally, Doyle was named the Rockies 2024 Heart and Hustle Award winner, an award given by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association to active players who demonstrate a passion for the game of baseball and best embody the values, spirit and traditions of the game.

Tovar becomes the third Rockies shortstop all-time to take home a Gold Glove Award, joining Troy Tulowitzki (2010-11) and Neifi Perez (2000). In 2024, he finished second among Major League shortstops with a .988 fielding percentage while ranking first in total chances (676) and double plays (113), also leading all Major Leaguer position players in assists (435). Since his first full season in 2023, his .988 fielding percentage ranks second among Major League shortstops while his 1,254 total chances, 827 assists and 208 double plays all lead the Majors. Over that same span, he also ranks second among all shortstops with 30 outs above average and 22 defensive runs saved.

Offensively, Tovar slashed .269/.295/.469 with 45 doubles, four triples, 26 home runs and 78 RBI across 157 games, leading the club in home runs and extra-base hits while ranking among NL leaders in doubles (45, 1st), extra-base hits (75, 2nd), three-hit games (16, T-3rd), hits (176, 4th), total bases (307, 4th) and multi-hit games (50, 5th). He’s the fifth shortstop in Major League history, and the only Venezuelan-born player all-time, to have 45-plus doubles in a season before his age 23 season, joining Hanley Ramirez (46, 2006, Florida), Alex Rodriguez (54, 1996, Seattle), Cal Ripken Jr. (47, 1983, Baltimore) and Lou Boudreau (46, 1940, Cleveland).
