A’s Recall RHP Medina from Las Vegas; Option RHP Kaprielian to Las Vegas

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s recalled right-handed pitcher Luis Medina from Triple-A Las Vegas and optioned right-handed pitcher James Kaprielian to Las Vegas, the club announced today.

Medina is 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA in three starts with Las Vegas and is scheduled to make his Major League debut tomorrow with a start against the Angels. He has held the opposition to a .161 batting average at Triple-A and has 11 strikeouts in 9.1 innings, but also has five walks, three wild pitches and a hit batter. The 24-year-old right-handed pitcher was acquired from the New York Yankees last year on Aug. 1 with Cooper Bowman, JP Sears and Ken Waldichuk for Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino. Medina combined to go 5-7 with a 5.24 ERA and .704 opponents OPS in a career-high 24 starts for Somerset in the Yankees organization and Midland in the A’s farm system in 2022. He is 15-24 with a 4.83 ERA in 96 games, including 94 starts, in seven seasons in the minors. Medina has 468 strikeouts in 391.1 innings (10.76 per nine innings) but also has 274 walks (6.30 per nine innings) and 100 wild pitches (2.30 per nine innings).

Kaprielian began the season in the A’s starting rotation and went 0-2 with a 12.15 ERA in three starts before moving to the bullpen. He allowed five runs on six hits in 2.2 innings over three relief appearances and is 0-2 with a 12.94 ERA, .333 opponents batting average and 1.100 OPS in six games overall.
