A's announce roster moves

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s placed outfielder Stephen Piscotty on the COVID-19 injured list, the club announced today. The A’s also placed left-handed pitchers A.J. Puk and Kirby Snead and catcher Austin Allen on the restricted list. To take their spots, the A’s have added left-handed pitcher Zach Logue, right-handed pitcher Ryan Castellani, catcher Christian Bethancourt and infielder Drew Jackson to the roster as substitute players. The A’s also announced that outfielder Luis Barrera has cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Bethancourt is 5-for-20 (.250) with two doubles, two home runs, two RBI and a .968 OPS in six games with Triple-A Las Vegas. He was a non-roster invitee with the A’s this spring and batted .391 with a home run, six RBI and a 1.053 OPS in 14 games. The 30-year-old right-handed hitter has not played in the majors since 2017 with San Diego and is a .222 career hitter with eight home runs and 46 RBI in 161 games over five seasons with Atlanta (2013-15) and the Padres (2016-17).

Castellani has three saves and a 4.15 ERA in four relief appearances with Las Vegas. Opponents are hitting .294 and he has walked three and struck out four in 4.1 innings. The 26-year-old right-hander was a non-roster invitee with the A’s this spring and compiled a 3.00 ERA in three relief appearances. Castellani has pitched for Colorado in parts of the previous two seasons and is 1-4 with a 5.79 ERA and .249 opponents batting average in 11 career appearances, including 10 starts.

Jackson is 6-for-21 (.286) with four RBI and three walks in six games with Las Vegas. He was a non-roster invitee with the A’s this spring and batted .370 with three RBI in 15 games. The 28-year-old right-handed hitter made his Major League debut with Baltimore in 2019 and went 0-for-3 with a walk in three games. Jackson is a graduate of Miramonte High School in Orinda and played three seasons at Stanford University.

Logue was one of four players acquired from Toronto for Matt Chapman on March 16 and has no decisions, a 5.40 ERA and .269 opponents batting average in two starts with Las Vegas. He has walked three and struck out six in 6.2 innings. The 25-year-old left-hander went 0-1 with an 8.10 ERA and .231 opponents batting average in two relief appearances this spring. Logue was the ninth round selection of the Blue Jays in the 2017 First-Year Player Draft and is 32-16 with a 3.46 ERA in 86 games, including 75 starts, in five seasons in the minors. He has struck out 395 and walked 106 in 421.0 innings.
