Pirates announce a new Sunday alternate uniform
The Pittsburgh Pirates today unveiled the team's new Sunday alternate uniform for the 2016 season. The uniform, which will be worn during Sunday home games throughout the 2016 season, is a replica of the iconic 1979 World Champion Pirates uniform.
The gold Majestic v-neck pullover jersey will be accompanied with black pants, designed with two gold stripes running down the outside of each leg. The uniform will be completed with a Pirates pillbox cap, designed with three gold stripes and the classic Pirates gold "P."
The uniform is an exact replica of the one worn by the 1979 team during Game Seven of the World Series when the Pirates defeated the Baltimore Orioles 4-1 at Memorial Stadium to claim the organization's fifth World Championship. The 1977-1979 style gold v-neck jersey was one of the first in the Club's history to display each player's name on the back.
"The 1979 uniforms have always been widely popular with our fans and we believe this is the right complement to our existing uniform collection," said Pirates President Frank Coonelly. "Every season we strive for ways to pay tribute to the great teams of our past. This is a unique opportunity for the organization to recognize the 1979 World Series Champions."
The new alternate uniform replaces the team's early 1970's-era inspired Sunday alternate, a mustard gold cap and a pullover style jersey that was introduced during the 2013 season. The Sunday alternate uniform is the only change to the Pirates uniform line-up this season as the Club will continue to wear the home white, road gray, alternate black and alternate camouflage.
The new Sunday Alternate jersey and pillbox cap will be on sale starting at 10 a.m. tomorrow, February 19, at the Pirates Majestic Clubhouse Store, located at the PNC Park Centerfield Gate by the Willie Stargell statue on Federal Street. The Clubhouse Store is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The new alternate jerseys will also be available tomorrow morning at the Pirates Team Store located at McKechnie Field in Bradenton, Fla.
