Phillies Trade Gregory Soto To Orioles

The Phillies have acquired minor league right-handed pitchers Seth Johnson and Moisés Chace from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for left-handed pitcher Gregory Soto. Johnson has been optioned to double-A Reading.

Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Johnson, 25, made 18 starts for double-A Bowie, posting a 2.63 ERA (19 ER, 65.0 IP) with 61 strikeouts and 35 walks this season. In his minor league career, the Concord, N.C., native is 7-15 with a 2.83 ERA (67 ER, 213.0 IP) in 62 games (55 starts). Johnson was originally selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the first round (Competitive Balance Round A, 40th overall) of the 2019 MLB Draft. He was ranked as the No. 8 prospect in the Orioles system by MLB.com.

Chace, 21, went 2-2 with a 3.46 ERA (20 ER, 52.0 IP) with 76 strikeouts and 30 walks in 17 outings (9 starts) this year for single-A Aberdeen. A native of Venezuela, Chace signed with the Orioles as an international free agent on July 2, 2019.

Soto, 29, has gone 2-4 with two saves, a 4.08 ERA (16 ER, 35.1 IP), 44 strikeouts and 20 walks in 43 outings this season. Since being acquired via trade with the Detroit Tigers on Jan. 7, 2023, he has posted a 4.42 ERA (47 ER, 95.2 IP) with 109 strikeouts to 42 walks across 112 appearances for the Phillies. Soto was originally signed by the Tigers as an amateur free agent on Dec. 26, 2012.
