Padres Acquire OF Edward Olivares & RHP Jared Carkuff from the Blue Jays

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres have acquired outfielder Edward Olivares and right-handed pitcher Jared Carkuff from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for infielder Yangervis Solarte, Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller announced today.
In 2017, Olivares batted .269 (133-for-494) with 27 doubles, 10 triples, 17 home runs, 72 RBI, 93 runs scored and 20 stolen bases in 120 games combined between Single-A Lansing and Single-A Dunedin. The 21-year-old finished second in the Midwest League in runs (82), third in slugging percentage (.500) and extra-base hits (52), tied for fourth in triples (9), sixth in total bases (213) and tied for ninth in home runs (17). He earned Midwest League Player of the Week honors in July before being promoted to Dunedin in mid-August. Across parts of four minor league seasons, Olivares has accrued a career .267 average (215-for-805) with 43 doubles, 15 triples, 22 home runs, 110 RBI, 153 runs scored and 47 stolen bases. He was originally signed by the Blue Jays as an international free agent in 2014 from Caracas, Venezuela.
Carkuff, 24, went 3-4 with eight saves and a 3.86 ERA (27 ER, 63.0 IP) in 34 relief appearances between Single-A Vancouver, Lansing, Dunedin and Triple-A Buffalo last season. He also posted a 1.17 WHIP (15 BB, 59 H) and a 3.40 SO/BB ratio (51 SO). The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Bell Buckle, Tenn., native has a 7-4 record with 15 saves and a 3.21 ERA in 52 career minor league games. He was selected by Toronto in the 35th round of the June 2016 draft out of Austin Peay State University.
