Orioles recall three players from Triple-A Norfolk
The Orioles today announced that they have recalled LHP JAYSON AQUINO, C CALEB JOSEPH, and RHP TYLER WILSON from Triple-A Norfolk. Additionally, OF MICHAEL BOURN and OF DREW STUBBS have reported to the club.
Aquino, 23, pitched to a 3.72 ERA (53 ER/128.1 IP) between Double-A Bowie (20 games, 19 starts) and Triple-A Norfolk (five games) this season. He was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week from May 30-June 5, going 2-0 over 15.0 scoreless innings in two starts. Over 124 career minor league games (117 starts), Aquino went 39-47 with a 3.08 ERA (246 ER/719.1 IP) and 580 strikeouts. He made his Major League debut on July 4 at Los Angeles (NL), tossing 0.2 scoreless inning. Aquino will wear No. 64.
Joseph, 30, has batted .193/.240/.211 (22-for-114) with two doubles and six runs scored over 40 games with the Orioles this season. He hit .250/.286/.250 (10-for-40) with four RBI in nine games with Triple-A Norfolk this season. In 222 career Major League games, Joseph has batted .218/.277/.349 with 20 home runs and 77 RBI.
Wilson, 26, has gone 4-6 with a 5.38 ERA (54 ER/90.1 IP) and 52 strikeouts over 20 games (13 starts) with the Orioles in 2016. He went 2-0 with a 4.56 ERA (12 ER/23.2 IP) in six starts with Triple-A Norfolk this season. The 2014 Orioles Jim Palmer Minor League Pitcher of the Year went 39-29 with a 3.69 ERA (251 ER/612.1 IP) and 528 strikeouts over 111 career minor league starts.
Bourn, 33, was acquired on August 31 from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for minor league OF JASON HEINRICH. Bourn has batted .261/.307/.362 (86-for-329) with 12 doubles, six triples, three home runs, 43 runs scored, 30 RBI, and 13 stolen bases in 89 games with Arizona this season. Over 1,337 career Major League games, he has hit .266/.329/.356 with 190 doubles, 69 triples, 34 home runs, 673 runs scored, 353 RBI, and 339 stolen bases. Bourn was originally selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the fourth round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft. Since the start of 2008, Bourn ranks third in the Major Leagues with 66 triples and ranks second with 320 stolen bases. He will wear No. 1.
Stubbs, 31, was claimed off waivers from the Texas Rangers on August 31. He has batted .259/.343/.414 (15-for-58) with three home runs, six RBI, and eight stolen bases over 39 games between the Rangers and Atlanta Braves this season. Over 881 career Major League games, Stubbs has hit .244/.314/.396 with 106 doubles, 20 triples, 92 home runs, 282 RBI, and 160 stolen bases. Originally selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the first round (No. 8 overall) of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, Stubbs has stolen more than 20 bases in a single season four times (2010, 2011, 2012, 2014), including a career-high 40 steals in 2011 which ranked tied for second in the National League. He will wear No. 18.
