Miami Marlins Acquire Infield Prospect Wilfredo Lara From The New York Mets

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today announced that the team has acquired Minor League infielder Wilfredo Lara from the New York Mets in exchange for right-handed reliever Huascar Brazobán.

Lara, 20, is rated as the 22nd-best prospect in the Mets system per MLB Pipeline, and has slashed .244/.349./.343 (69x283) in 78 games this season for High-A Brooklyn, with eight doubles, four triples, four home runs, and 29 RBI. Signed by New York (NL) as an International free agent out of Bani, Dominican Republic, the right-handed hitter owns a career .247/.348/.390 (214x867) slash line in 250 games (2021-24) in the Mets Minor League system, with 39 doubles, 11 triples, 21 home runs, and 104 RBI. Last season, Lara's 122 wRC+ tied for the seventh-best mark in the Florida State League, while he was one of only seven players at the Single-A level with at least 14 homers and 14 steals.

Brazobán, 34, made 20 relief appearances for Miami this season, going 1-2 with a 2.93 ERA (10 ER/30.2 IP). He held opposing batters to a career-low .179 AVG (20x112). Across nine outings in July, Brazoban did not allow an earned run (13.2 IP). The right-hander made a career-high 50 appearances in 2023, posting a 4.14 ERA (27 ER/58.2 IP) while notching a career-high 65 strikeouts. The Villa Mella, Dominican Republic, native owns a 7-5 record and and 3.64 ERA (48 ER/ 118.2 IP) in 94 career Major League games with Miami (2022-24). The seven-year Minor League veteran was signed by the Marlins as a Minor League free agent on Jan. 4, 2022, and had earlier spent five years in the Rockies organization (2012-17).
