Mariners recall OF Guillermo Heredia, RHP Casey Lawrence from Triple-A Tacoma
SEATTLE, Wash. - Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:
Heredia (#5) and Lawrence (#61) will be in uniform and available for tonight's (7:10 pm PT) game vs. the Oakland Athletics.
Heredia, 27, has hit .385 (5x13) with 2 runs, 1 double and 3 walks in 6 games with the Rainiers after being optioned to AAA Tacoma on April 22. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound outfielder began the season with Seattle, batting .310 (9x29) with 4 runs, 1 double, 2 home runs and 4 RBI in 16 games. He was named to his 2nd career Opening Day roster after batting .233 (10x43) with 4 runs, 4 double, 1 triple and 2 RBI in 19 Cactus League games with Seattle this spring.
In 123 games with the Mariners in 2017, Heredia hit .249 (96x386) with 43 runs, 16 doubles, 6 home runs and 24 RBI. He made 104 starts in the outfield last season, 6th-most by a rookie in club history. Heredia originally signed with the Mariners as a free agent on March 1, 2016. The native of Matanzas, Cuba, made his Major League debut with the Mariners on July 29, 2016 at the Cubs. In parts of 3 Major League seasons with the Mariners (2016-c), he is batting .252 (128x507) with 59 runs, 20 double, 9 home runs and 40 RBI in 184 career games.
Lawrence, 30, made 3 appearances with the Rainiers after being optioned to AAA Tacoma on April 14. He went 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA (3 ER, 11.0 IP) with 11 strikeouts and 1 walk in 3 games, including 2 starts. Prior to being optioned to Tacoma, Lawrence made 2 relief appearances with the Mariners this season, posting a 10.38 ERA (5 ER, 4.1 IP) with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks. The 6-foot, 175-pound right-hander was named to his first career Opening Day roster after recording a 1.80 ERA (3 ER, 15.0 IP) with 17 strikeouts and 2 walks in 6 games (2 starts) with Seattle during Spring Training.
In 2017, Lawrence spent most of the season with Seattle, where he went 2-0 with a 5.57 ERA (26 ER, 42.0 IP) with 45 strikeouts and 14 walks in 23 relief appearances. He was claimed off waivers by the Mariners from Toronto on May 11. The native of McSherrytown, PA, made his Major League debut with the Blue Jays on April 8, 2017 at Tampa Bay. It was his first of 4 appearances (2 starts) with Toronto, where he was 0-3 with an 8.78 ERA (13 ER, 13.1 IP) with 7 strikeouts and 11 walks. He combined for a record of 3-4 with a 3.61 ERA (27 ER, 67.1 IP) with 48 strikeouts and 11 walks in 14 games (10 starts) at the triple-A level with Buffalo (3 GS) and Tacoma (11 G, 7 GS). In parts of 2 Major League seasons with the Blue Jays (2017) and Mariners (2017-c), he is 2-3 with a 6.64 ERA (44 ER, 59.2 IP) with 55 strikeouts and 27 walks in 29 games (2 starts). Lawrence was originally signed by Toronto as a non-drafted free agent on June 15, 2010.
Altavilla, 25, is 2-2 with 4 holds and a 4.38 ERA (6 ER, 12.1 IP) in 13 relief appearances with the Mariners this season. He has struck out 16 and walked 9 while limiting opponents to a .190 (8x42) average against. He went 1-1 with 2 holds and a 1.29 ERA (1 ER, 7.0 IP) with 9 strikeouts and 3 walks in his first 7 outings of the season (3/29-4/14). Since April 17, he is 1-1 with 2 holds and an 8.44 ERA (5 ER, 5.1 IP) with 7 strikeouts and 6 walks in 6 games.
In 2017, the 5-foot-11, 200-pound right-hander went 1-1 with a 4.24 ERA (22 ER, 46.2 IP) with 52 strikeouts and 20 walks in 41 relief appearances with the Mariners. He also made 20 appearances with AAA Tacoma, where he went 2-0 with 6 saves and a 1.54 ERA (4 ER, 23.1 IP) with 36 strikeouts and 15 walks. In parts of 3 Major League seasons with the Mariners (2016-c), he is 3-3 with a 3.66 ERA (29 ER, 71.1 IP) with 78 strikeouts and 30 walks in 69 games. The native of McKeesport, PA, was originally selected by Seattle in the 5th round of the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Mercyhurst (PA) College. He made his Major League debut with the Mariners on Aug. 27, 2016 at Chicago-AL.
Ramírez, 27 (turns 28 on May 2), made 2 starts with the Mariners after being activated from the 10-day disabled list on April 22. In his 2 starts with Seattle this season, he was 0-2 with a 10.24 ERA (11 ER, 9.2 IP). The 5-foot-10, 215-pound right-hander was first placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right shoulder-latissimus dorsi strain on March 28 (retroactive to March 26). He combined to make 3 starts on a rehab assignment with high-A Modesto (1 start) and AAA Tacoma (2 starts), posting a record of 0-1 with a 2.13 ERA (3 ER, 12.2 IP) with 10 strikeouts and a 2 walks.
Ramírez split the 2017 season between Tampa Bay and Seattle, combining for a record of 5-6 with a 4.39 ERA (64 ER, 131.1 IP) with 109 strikeouts and 31 walks in 37 games (19 starts). He was acquired by the Mariners from the Rays in exchange for RHP Steve Cishek on July 28, 2017. In 7 Major League seasons with Seattle (2012-14, '17-c) and Tampa Bay (2015-17), he is 30-37 with 3 saves and a 4.29 ERA (287 ER, 601.2 IP) with 469 strikeouts and 170 walks in 184 games (84 starts). Ramírez was traded by Seattle to Tampa Bay on March 31, 2015 in exchange for LHP Mike Montgomery. The native of Rivas, Nicaragua, was signed by Seattle in 2007 and made his Major League debut with the Mariners in 2012.
